Rock On

12.50pm. This morning we did more detailed investigations of rocks, so we were looking at grain sorting, colour, banding, formation and deposition, along with where each of the samples fits within the rock cycle.

Before we finished, we all set Geiger counters running to measure the background radiation during the lunch period, as this will be useful this afternoon when we come to determine levels of radiation emitted by sources, and how they are stopped by various materials.

I dashed back to Swanborough, dropped off my materials then dashed to Bramber House for lunch, to discover that I had left my name badge on my lab coat, which is in the lab. Fortunately I ran into David Bard ambling along towards Bramber House, so he said that if necessary he would vouch for me.

I had half of a chicken baguette which was mostly mayo and lettuce, and some pasta in a tomato sauce, and some coleslaw. Lunch today was light and cold, but I don't mind that; the last thing I wanted to do was to have a heavy lunch and to be falling asleep during the afternoon session.

I sat with Pam, Margaret and Kirsten for lunch, and we were chatting about topics as diverse as decimalisation and metrification, which then lead onto games we all used to play in the school playground, such as British Bulldog, cat's cradle, skipping ropes etc. Memories.

I have just under an hour before I have to be back in the lab. Lunchtimes always seem to be so rushed; there is just about time to wolf down lunch, dash back here, change the batteries in the audio recorder and hammer out a quick blog entry so that Alan has something to read. I hope he is reading these during the day, as there simply it not the time for me or really the ability for me to send him emails when I'm in the lab. It would look conspicious to say the least to be carrying my laptop around with me!

Apparently last night's lecture on the physics of Angels and Demons was extremely good, and the substantial part of it is available as a powerpoint presentation. Copies are apparently available so I will see if I can get one of those later on.
