Birling Gap

Left the campus at 8am, then a pleasant coach journey to Birling Gap. Did some initial observations, mostly wind, weather and cloud formation, along with compass direcvtions and Ordnance Survey references (man the activity tutor is frightfully-frightfully).

Then half way up to the top we identified five specific plant species. Up to the top and we did a field sketch, followed by a formal survey using random sampling inside a quadrant. Straightforward but long (i.e, tedious) work. The tutors then measured the soil pH in a couple of different sites, using two methods, firstly an electronic pH kit, and secondly some paper strips where the colour changes are a guide to the pH.

Down to the blustery beach, on with the hard hats. We had to sketch the rock face, which was pretty difficult, and also do identification of the rocks. Tested some rocks with weak acid to see if they were carbonates. Two out of the three were, the other was not.

Then it was back to the coach, which was boiling hot, and the packed lunches were handed out. The sandwiches were very nice, Kirsten and I both privately thought that they would be warm and curly by now, but they must have been in a good cool box.

We are coming to the end of our alloted 20 minutes for lunch. Today is interesting but there never seems to be enough time to go through things in depth. We are just about to leave for Newhaven for the afternoon session. Despite it being flat there is no mobile signal here in this car park, so I will have to send this in a few minutes when we are on the road. Some of the countryside scenery is spectacular.
